DUI Arrests Rise on Thanksgiving and Holiday Season

Whether you’re having a glass of wine with your Thanksgiving turkey and ham or enjoying eggnog on Christmas morning, holiday celebrations often involve the consumption of alcohol. However, before you drink too many holiday spirits, you need to know that DUI arrests rise during the holiday season.

Our experienced DUI defense lawyers have more than 35 years of experience defending clients facing DUI charges. Here is what you need to know about the possibility of being arrested for DUI during the holidays.

More DUI Arrests Occur During the Holidays

During the holidays, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) enforces a “maximum enforcement period,” which means more areas are patrolled. This is due to the high number of DUI arrests and traffic violations that occur during this time.

Is DUI really a serious issue during the holiday season? Well, in 2017, CHP made 1,057 DUI arrests during the Thanksgiving weekend, according to reports. In 2016, there were 902 DUI arrests from the day before Thanksgiving to the Monday after it. During the week of Christmas in 2017, 917 DUI arrests were made by CHP, compared to 621 the previous year.

Additionally, 936 people were arrested for DUI between Dec. 29, 2017 and Jan. 1, 2018, a 22 percent increase over the previous year.

According a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there has also been an increase in the number of fatal collisions involving drivers who had alcohol or drugs in their system. From 2005 to 2015, that number increased from 26.2 percent to 42.6 percent.

That is why law enforcement actively searches for drunk and impaired drivers during the holiday season.

Consequences of DUI (VC 23152)

You face harsh penalties if you are convicted of DUI under VC 23152. A first-time DUI conviction is a misdemeanor offense punishable by up to six months in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000. A conviction could also lead to your driver’s license being suspended for up to six months and you will likely be required to complete an alcohol education course.

That is why you need to act immediately. Contact our skilled DUI defense attorneys at Wallin & Klarich immediately so we can discuss your case in detail and help you obtain the best possible outcome in your case.
